CO2 & emissions calculator
Compare the indicative climate footprint of gas, electric and water cremation for your volume and energy mix. Every figure is an editable assumption.
Editable assumptions. Energy use per cremation matches the cost calculator defaults; use your country's grid intensity for a fair comparison.
Gas flame cremator
100 kg
CO2 per cremation
100 t per year
Electric flame cremator
63 kg
CO2 per cremation
62.5 t per year
Water cremation
38 kg
CO2 per cremation
37.5 t per year
Indicative only. Climate footprint is one factor: local air-quality limits (mercury, dioxins, particulates), water use and effluent for water cremation, and legal availability also matter. Ask suppliers for measured energy data per cycle.
How the estimate works
The calculator multiplies the energy used per cremation by an emission factor. Gas cremators burn natural gas directly, so their footprint follows the gas volume. Electric cremators and water cremation systems use electricity, so their footprint depends heavily on the carbon intensity of your grid and on whether you buy renewable power or generate it on site.
Heat recovery reduces net energy demand when captured heat replaces another heat source, for example heating the building or supplying a district network. Figures here are simplified and are not a lifecycle assessment; they exclude manufacturing, construction, coffins, chemicals and transport.
